Chameleons

Our Chameleons

Walkabout Reptiles have a real passion for Chameleons and are very pleased to be working with a select few. Chameleons are for the more experienced hobbyist and breeder as their needs are very particular.

The joy of chameleons is not only their rich diversity of colours, shapes and sizes but also the level of difficulty in breeding them. Once you have successfully hatched and raised these baby chameleons it gives you a fantastic sense of achievement.

Furcifer Lateralis Lateralis

Carpet Chameleon

The smallest true chameleon species, the carpet chameleon, averages 6-8 inches in length. Carpets chameleons are capable of intense displays of colour and pattern variations.

Males can easily be distinguished from females by their greatly enlarged hemipenal area and have more subtle colours than females. They generally exhibit mostly greens, yellows, blues and white. Females often add to those colours soft pastels of pink, blues, and oranges. When gravid, females are capable of displaying intense shades of bright red, orange, purple, blue, and yellow with striking black patterning.

Chamaeleo Deremensis

Usambara Three Horned Chameleon

The Three Horned Chameleon inhabits the mountain rain forests of Tanzania and reaches 12-16 inches in total length. These are a stocky species and have a short tail relative to the body length.

Body coloration for adults is medium to pale green with three or four pale yellow slashes. A scattering of white, blue, red or brown patches and streaks are sometimes present. Excited/stress colouration displays are dark green and black spotting. The reverse of this pattern, i.e. light spots on a dark green pattern, can also be displayed. Males possess three large horns whereas females lack any trace of horns.

Furcifer Pardalis

Panther Chameleon

Panther Chameleons are only found in Madagascar and come in several colour variations depending on their specific locality.

Adult males gain a length of 12-18 inches in captivity and are easily recognised by their shovel-like rostral projection and intense colour variations. Males also have a thicker tail base compared to the slender tail of females. Females are usually less than 13 inches in length and their colouration does vary but are generally pale in colour and do not shown the same intense colours of the males.
